Abenteuerroman, in German literature, a form of the picaresque novel. The Abenteuerroman is an entertaining story recounting the adventures of the hero, but it often incorporates a serious aspect. An example of the genre is the 17th-century Der Abentheurliche Simplicissimus (Adventurous Simplicissimus) by H.J.C. von Grimmelshausen. The Abenteuerroman is related to the Bildungsroman, a genre in which the subject is the formative years of the main character.
