It is recorded that Roman missionaries, who played a major role in the conversion of England to Christianity in the early 7th century, brought painted images with them; but next to nothing is known about painting on panels or walls in the British Isles during the Dark Ages. There is, however, a good deal of information about the illumination of manuscripts. In the 6th and 7th centuries monasteries were founded and prospered, first in Ireland, later in England.
