columbiad, any of certain epics recounting the European settlement and growth of the United States. It may have been derived from La Colombiade, ou la foi portée au nouveau monde, a poem by the French author Marie-Anne Fiquet de Boccage. A relatively well-known example is The Columbiad (1807; an extensive revision of The Vision of Columbus, 1787) by Joel Barlow.
