Alexander Wetmore (born June 18, 1886, North Freedom, Wis., U.S.—died Dec. 7, 1978, Maryland) American ornithologist noted for his research on birds of the Western Hemisphere. As an employee of the Biological Survey of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Wetmore was particularly interested in avian anatomy, osteology, fossil birds, migration, and taxonomy. He headed ornithological trips to Spain, many parts of South America, Panama, and almost every state in the United States. He wrote many of his articles and books while serving concurrently, after 1925, as assistant secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and director of the U.S. National Museum. In ...(100 of 149 words)
