David Harbour (born April 10, 1975, White Plains, New York, U.S.) American actor best known for portraying police chief Jim Hopper in the acclaimed science-fiction–horror television series Stranger Things (2016– ). He is also known for playing the title role in the superhero film Hellboy (2019) and for portraying the Red Guardian (also known as Alexei Shostakov) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Black Widow (2021).
Early life
Harbour was raised in New York state by Kenneth and Nancy (née Riley) Harbour, who both work as real estate agents. He was inspired to pursue an acting career after watching director Kenneth Branagh’s film adaptation (1989) of William Shakespeare’s historical drama Henry V. He graduated from Byram Hills High School in Armonk, New York, and went on to attend Dartmouth College, where he graduated with a degree in drama in 1997.
Career
Harbour made his professional acting debut portraying a farmhand (and serving as an understudy) in the 1999 Broadway revival of The Rainmaker. He was cast in a supporting role in The Invention of Love in 2001. He garnered a Tony Award nomination for best actor in a featured role for his performance as the young biology professor Nick in a revival of Edward Albee’s play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in 2005.
During this time, Harbour also began taking television roles, starting with a recurring spot in the soap opera As the World Turns (1999–2000). He also made appearances in the crime dramas Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2002), Hack (2003), and Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2004 and 2009).
He made his film debut playing Robert Kinsey, the young adult son of sex researcher Alfred Kinsey, in the biographical drama Kinsey (2004). He went on to land minor roles in high-profile films, such as Steven Spielberg’s science-fiction thriller War of the Worlds (2005) and Ang Lee’s romantic drama Brokeback Mountain (2005). He was also cast in prominent supporting roles, including a turn as CIA agent Gregg Beam in the James Bond thriller Quantum of Solace (2008). He was later cast alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the romantic drama Revolutionary Road (2008) and also shared screen time with Denzel Washington in the thriller The Equalizer (2014).
Harbour landed a breakout role in 2016, portraying beleaguered small-town police chief Jim Hopper in Netflix’s popular science-fiction–horror series Stranger Things. The series follows the adventures of a group of teenagers in the 1980s as they investigate a mysterious portal that releases hostile supernatural creatures into their town. When the series begins Hopper is an alcoholic divorcé who is struggling with depression after losing his daughter to cancer. Harbour was drawn to the role because of Hopper’s weighty backstory and his ensuing battle with depression. Harbour was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 26, and he reportedly views his portrayal of Hopper as an opportunity to highlight the struggles of individuals living with mental illness. He has said that playing Hopper rejuvenated his career and his love of acting, because it allowed him to prove to himself that he was adept at playing psychologically complex characters.
Harbour’s success on Stranger Things opened up new opportunities for him in Hollywood. He starred as the antihero title character in director Neil Marshall’s 2019 reboot of Hellboy. The film was not well received by critics, however, and Harbour expressed disappointment in the editing of the film, stating that some of the character work that he had added to the role was ultimately cut. He landed another superhero role, portraying the Red Guardian (the foster parent of the superheroine title character) in the Marvel blockbuster Black Widow in 2021. The film was lauded by fans and critics alike, with some critics noting the chemistry that Harbour shared with costar Rachel Weisz.
Harbour’s career continued to gain momentum in the 2020s. He battled mercenary kidnappers as Santa Claus in the Christmas action-comedy film Violent Night in 2022. Additionally, he is expected to return to the role of Jim Hopper for the fifth and final season of Stranger Things. Harbour married singer Lily Allen in September 2020, and the couple live in Brooklyn.
