Diego Barros Arana (born Aug. 16, 1830, Santiago, Chile—died Nov. 4, 1907, Santiago) was a Chilean historian, educator, and diplomat best known for his Historia general de Chile, 16 vol. (1884–1902; “General History of Chile”). Barros Arana originally studied for a legal career but gave up the law to pursue his interests in history and literature. In 1859 the Chilean government exiled him for writing articles critical of the government. While in exile he visited Buenos Aires, Montevideo, and Rio de Janeiro, where he collected historical data, and he later did the same in France, England, and Spain. He was ...(100 of 246 words)
