Edith Rebecca Saunders (born Oct. 14, 1865, Brighton, Eng.—died June 6, 1945, Cambridge) British botanist and plant geneticist known for her contributions to the understanding of trait inheritance in plants and for her insights on flower anatomy. Noted British geneticist J.B.S. Haldane described her as the mother of British plant genetics. Saunders attended Handsworth Ladies’ College, near Birmingham, and from 1884 to 1888 was a student at Newnham College, a women’s school at Cambridge, where she studied natural sciences.
