Jacques Rancière (born 1940, Algiers, Algeria) Algerian-born French philosopher who made important contributions to political philosophy, the philosophy of education, and aesthetics from the late 20th century. Rancière studied philosophy at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris under the structuralist Marxist philosopher Louis Althusser. In 1969 he joined the philosophy faculty of the newly created Centre Universitaire Expérimental de Vincennes, which became the University of Paris VIII in 1971. He remained there until his retirement as professor emeritus in 2000. He also served as professor of philosophy at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland.
