Dunedin, city and port, Otago local government region, southeastern South Island, New Zealand. It is located at the head of Otago Harbour (14 miles [23 km] long) with deepwater Port Chalmers at its mouth. Founded in 1848 as a Scottish Free Church settlement, the town was chosen for its timber resources and potential for farm settlement. It was called Dunedin for the Gaelic word for Edinburgh (Duneideann). The discovery of gold in 1861 in Otago brought prosperity and migration to the town, making it New Zealand’s leading city during the second half of the 19th century.
