Wilmington, city, seat of New Hanover county, southeastern North Carolina, U.S. It is the state’s chief seaport and lies on the Cape Fear River, about 30 miles (48 km) above its mouth. Settled in the early 1730s and called New Carthage and then New Liverpool, it was incorporated (1740) as New Town (Newton) and later renamed to honour Spencer Compton, earl of Wilmington. The first American armed resistance to the Stamp Act occurred there in November 1765.
