How did Reza Shah Pahlavi come to power?

Reza, an Iranian army officer, and his men occupied Tehrān during a 1921 coup. He took command of the military and became war minister shortly thereafter. Dividing and weakening his political opponents over time, he maneuvered to become prime minister in 1923. In 1925 the Iranian parliament, acting as a constituent assembly, elected him shah.
