Since UNESCO’s inception, its definition of literacy has expanded from traditional reading and writing skills to also include concepts of digital literacy, such as the ability to communicate and interpret information in an increasingly fast-paced digital world. While its efforts toward literacy have evolved, UNESCO still recognizes that hundreds of millions of people around the world do not acquire fundamental reading and writing skills.
