Nurse practitioners are prepared at the master’s level in universities to provide a broad range of diagnostic and treatment services to individuals and families. This form of advanced nursing practice began in the United States in the 1960s, following the passage of health care legislation (Medicare and Medicaid) that guaranteed citizens over age 65 and low-income citizens access to health care services. In response, some nurses, working in collaboration with physicians, obtained additional training and expanded their practice by assuming responsibility for the diagnosis and treatment of common acute and stable chronic illnesses of children and adults.
