Johnny Depp, orig. John Christopher Depp II, (born June 9, 1963, Owensboro, Ky., U.S.), U.S. actor. He played in a band before turning to acting. After appearing (1987–90) in the television series 21 Jump Street, he focused on a film career, becoming known for his eclectic and unconventional roles. In 1990 he starred in Edward Scissorhands, his first of many collaborations with director Tim Burton. Depp subsequently starred in Ed Wood (1994), Donnie Brasco (1997), and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998). His portrayal of Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean films (2003, 2006, 2007, 2011, 2017) helped make them among the highest-grossing movies ever. His other credits included Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Public Enemies (2009), Alice in Wonderland (2010), Dark Shadows (2012), Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016), Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018), and Minamata (2020).
