Romário, orig. Romário de Souza Faria , (born Jan. 29, 1966, Rio de Janeiro, Braz.), Brazilian football (soccer) player. He played for a number of clubs, notably Vasco da Gama (1985–88, 2000–02, 2005–06, and 2007) and PSV Eindhoven (1988–93). A potent but temperamental striker known for his strength and mobility, he became one of the game’s most prolific goal scorers. He helped the Brazilian national team capture a silver medal at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, and he received the Golden Ball as the most outstanding performer at the 1994 World Cup after Brazil won the tournament. In 1994 he was also named FIFA’s Player of the Year.
