Ford Foundation, American philanthropic foundation, established in 1936 with gifts and bequests from Henry Ford and his son, Edsel. At the beginning of the 21st century, its assets exceeded $9 billion. Its chief concerns have been international affairs (particularly population control, the alleviation of food shortages, and the strengthening of democratic values), communications (especially educational media), humanities and the arts, and, increasingly, community development and the environment.
