The great epic Mahabharata represents the attempt of Vedic Brahmanism to adjust itself to the new circumstances reflected in the process of the Sanskritization (integration of Vedic beliefs, practices, and institutions) of the various non-Vedic communities. Many diverse trends of religious and philosophical thought have thus been synthesized in this work. In its philosophical views, the epic contains an early version of Samkhya (a belief in real matter and the plurality of individual souls), which is prior to the classical Samkhya of Ishvarakrishna, a 3rd-century-ce philosopher.
