Luxembourgish language, national language of Luxembourg. Luxembourgish is a Moselle-Franconian dialect of the West Middle German group. This old language has been enriched by many French words and phrases, and the resulting dialect is spoken by all classes of people in Luxembourg. The population of Luxembourg is generally bilingual or trilingual, most people speaking Luxembourgish and either French or German or all three. Historically, Luxembourgish has been used mostly orally, while French has been the language most commonly used in government and the courts and German has been the language most commonly used in newspapers. All three languages are used in the country’s schools.
