The origins of modern art are traditionally traced to the mid-19th-century rejection of Academic tradition in subject matter and style by certain artists and critics. Painters of the Impressionist school that emerged in France in the late 1860s sought to free painting from the tyranny of academic standards (narrative, conventional illusionism) and to explore the subjective effect of perceived nature.
