Donatello was one of greatest Italian Renaissance artists, noted especially for his sculptures in marble, bronze, and wood. His sculpted figures were some of the first since antiquity to represent anatomy correctly—though some late works were slightly exaggerated—and to suggest a sense of individuality.

Donatello was a very prolific sculptor whose works included: St. Mark and St. George ( c. 1415), two separate sculptures commissioned for the niches of Orasanmichele; David (undated), the first large-scale freestanding nude sculpture since antiquity; the so-called Gattamelata (1447–53), an influential equestrian monument; and St. Mary Magdalene ( c. 1450–55).

Donatello was born Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi and was of humble origins: he was the son of Niccolò di Betto Bardi, a Florentine wool carder. Donatello never married or had children.

Q: How was Donatello educated?

It is not known how Donatello began his career, but he probably learned stone carving from one of the sculptors working on the cathedral of Florence (the Duomo) about 1400. Between 1404 and 1407 he joined the workshop of Lorenzo Ghiberti , a sculptor who in 1402 had won the competition for the doors of the Baptistery .

The cause of Donatello’s death is not widely written about, but it is known that the last years of his life were spent designing twin bronze pulpits for San Lorenzo. He died at the age of 79 or 80.

Donatello (born c. 1386, Florence [Italy]—died December 13, 1466, Florence) was a master of sculpture in both marble and bronze, one of the greatest of all Italian Renaissance artists. A good deal is known about Donatello’s life and career, but little is known about his character and personality, and what is known is not wholly reliable. He never married and he seems to have been a man of simple tastes. Patrons often found him hard to deal with in a day when artists’ working conditions were regulated by guild rules.
