As early as 1898 Europeans had staked out colonies over all western Africa except for some 40,000 square miles of territory left to the Republic of Liberia. Portugal had taken virtually no active part in the scramble, and its once extensive influence was now confined within the 14,000 square miles that became the colony of Portuguese Guinea. Germany, the latecomer, had claimed the 33,000 square miles of Togo (together with the much larger Cameroon territory on the eastern borders of what is usually accepted as western Africa).
