Natural selection can be studied by analyzing its effects on changing gene frequencies, but it can also be explored by examining its effects on the observable characteristics—or phenotypes—of individuals in a population. Distribution scales of phenotypic traits such as height, weight, number of progeny, or longevity typically show greater numbers of individuals with intermediate values and fewer and fewer toward the extremes—this is the so-called normal distribution. When individuals with intermediate phenotypes are favoured and extreme phenotypes are selected against, the selection is said to be stabilizing. (See the left column of the figure.) The range and distribution of phenotypes ...(100 of 39215 words)
