Some cells that bear antigen-antibody complexes do not attract complement; their antibody molecules are far apart on the cell surface or are of a class that does not readily activate the complement system (e.g., IgA, IgD, and IgE). Other cells have outer membranes that are so tough or can be repaired so quickly that the cells are impermeable to activated complement. Still others are so large that phagocytes cannot ingest them.
