In contrast to the Soviet lunar landing efforts, during 1969 all went well for the Apollo program. In March the Apollo 9 crew successfully tested the Lunar Module in Earth orbit, and in May the Apollo 10 crew carried out a full dress rehearsal for the landing, coming within 15,200 metres (50,000 feet) of the lunar surface. On July 16, 1969, astronauts Armstrong, Aldrin, and Michael Collins set off on the Apollo 11 mission, the first lunar landing attempt.
