The Yayoi period is often identified with the characteristic pottery that gave its site name to the period, but metal objects, particularly the ritual bells called dōtaku, represent a significant artistic manifestation of that period. They were cast in bronze and imitative of a Chinese musical instrument. Visual records from the Chinese Warring States period (475–221 bc) indicate that bells in various and progressively larger sizes were suspended from a horizontal beam or pole.
