The system of tagmemic analysis, as presented by Kenneth L. Pike, was developed for the analysis not only of language but of all of human behaviour that manifests the property of patterning. In the following treatment, only language will be discussed. Every language is said to be trimodal—i.e., structured in three modes: phonology, grammar, and lexicon.
